In 1971 after finishing college, Dick had a traveling fellowship from Harvard ($3K) which he used to travel in Asia and Africa. In this photo, he is hitchhiking across Kenya. The truck that had given him a lift is in the background. Like most vehicles on that road, it had broken down. His pack is beside him.
