Maryam Mirza­kh­ani was awar­ded a Fields Medal in 2014 for her con­tri­bu­tions to the dy­nam­ics and geo­metry of Riemann sur­faces and their mod­uli spaces. Curtis McMul­len, un­der whose dir­ec­tion Maryam Mirza­kh­ani wrote her Ph.D. dis­ser­ta­tion at Har­vard (“Simple geodesics on hy­per­bol­ic sur­faces and volume of the mod­uli space of curves”, 2004), ex­plains the sig­ni­fic­ance of Mirza­kh­ani’s work at the In­ter­na­tion­al Con­gress of Math­em­aticians in Seoul (Au­gust 13, 2014).
