In addition to his contributions to thermodynamics, Tait was an early investigator of knot theory and a student at Peterhouse in his day, where he was later an Honorary Fellow. Thomas, a distinguished Welsh chemist, was Master at Peterhouse from 1993–2002, and a Honorary Fellow thereafter, and in 2010 a Founding Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, to which Evans and Jones were also elected as Fellow (Inaugural Election of 2010–2011) and Honorary Fellow (2018), respectively.
