Many thanks for the cop­ies of the first volume of your book! I will draw on it for wis­dom to im­part my stu­dents, if I may.

The art­icle “vari­ations on a theme”, a copy of which I gave Al­bert Co­hen, has been re­cast, and is now be­ing re­typed by my sec­ret­ary at Bell Labs. Once I have new ver­sions, I will send them to you. New ver­sions in the plur­al, be­cause the art­icle has put forth a bud: I’d got­ten one of the ideas in it from Al­bert, and I took it and made it in­to a short sep­ar­ate art­icle to be signed by both of us. It was only after writ­ing the earli­er art­icle that I re­membered a con­ver­sa­tion I had with Al­bert in San Fran­cisco, con­tain­ing the germ of that sec­tion. So I have not re­leased the art­icle (that’s why I haven’t sent you a copy), ex­cept to Al­bert and to Raphy [Ron­ald Coi­f­man], who wanted a ref­er­ence for the coif­lets, and of course I have not sub­mit­ted it to any journ­al. When Al­bert came to vis­it, we de­cided I’d re­move that sec­tion and make it in­to a sep­ar­ate art­icle, and only then would we de­cide what to do with it. That said, all that stuff is but a spe­cial case of wave pack­ets (and that too will be ex­pli­citly said), which means that the short art­icle might not be pub­lished at all. Any­way, I’ll send you all that in a week or two, and you’ll be able to tell me all that’s wrong with it.

Merci beau­c­oup pour les cop­ies du 1er tome de ton livre! Je vais y puis­er de la sa­gesse à com­mu­niquer à mes étu­di­ants, si tu le per­mets.

L’art­icle “vari­ations sur un thème”, dont j’avais donné une copie à Al­bert Co­hen, a été re­manié, et est en train d’être re­tapé par ma secrétaire à Bell. Dès que j’aurai les nou­velles ver­sions, je te les en­ver­rai. Nou­velles ver­sions avec s, parce qu’il a bour­geonné: en fait, une des idées m’avait été com­mu­niquée par Al­bert, et je l’ai en­levée et in­cor­porée dans un petit art­icle à part qui port­era nos 2 noms. Ce n’est qu’après la rédac­tion que je me suis souv­en­ue d’une con­ver­sa­tion que j’avais eu à San Fran­cisco avec Al­bert, qui con­tenait le ger­me de cette sec­tion de l’art­icle. Du coup, je n’ai pas dis­tribué l’art­icle (voilà pour­quoi je ne t’ai pas en­voyé de copie plus tôt), sauf à Al­bert et à Raphy, qui voulait une référence pour les coif­lettes, et je ne l’ai évidem­ment sou­mis à aucun journ­al. Lors de la vis­ite d’Al­bert, nous avons décidé que j’enlèverais cette sec­tion, que j’en ferais un petit art­icle à part, et que nous déciderions à ce mo­ment-là ce que nous en ferions. Ceci dit, tout cela n’est qu’un cas spécial des paquets d’onde (et cela aus­si sera dit ex­pli­cite­ment), ce qui fait que ce petit art­icle ne sera peut-être pas publié du tout. En­fin, je t’en­ver­rai tout cela dans une bonne se­maine, et tu pour­ras me dire tout le mal que tu en penses.
