Here, as prom­ised, are the two pa­pers you re­ques­ted cop­ies of. They’re hot out of the oven and still have a few little ty­pos (I hope there aren’t more). There is noth­ing deep in them, I’m afraid.

I just heard that you and Raphy [Ron­ald Coi­f­man] were both in­vited as “in­vited speak­ers” to the Great Con­gress in Ja­pan! That’s won­der­ful! I’m happy for you.

We are more of less in­stalled in Ann Ar­bor, and Robert and I are both teach­ing. That takes more time than we had budgeted for… Moreover, all those folks who take me for a real math­em­atician scare the hell out of me — soon­er or later they’ll real­ize it’s not true! Al­berto Grünbaum, chair­man at Berke­ley, has in­vited us to Cali­for­nia in March. He says he wants to make us an of­fer. There again, I won­der if they really know what they are talk­ing about. Any­way, we shall see.

Thanks again for send­ing me the first volume of your book! I’ve told my­self that I should cram from it every day (10 pages a day) and that that would help me be­came a real pro­fes­sion­al. What I have already read is won­der­ful.

Voici, comme promis, les 2 papi­ers dont tu me de­mandes des cop­ies. Ils sont tout frais, et avec en­core de petites er­reurs ty­po­graph­iques (j’espère qu’il n’y en a pas d’autres). Il n’y a ri­en de bi­en pro­fond, je crains.

Je vi­ens d’ap­pren­dre que Raphy et toi avec été in­vités tous les 2 comme “in­vited speak­ers” au Grand Con­grès au Ja­pon! C’est mer­veil­leux! J’en suis heureuse pour vous!

Nous sommes plus ou moins in­stallés ici à Ann Ar­bor, et Robert et moi en­sei­gnons tous les deux. Cela nous prend plus de temps que nous n’avi­ons prévu… En plus, toutes ces gens que me prennent pour une vraie mathématicienne me foutent la trouille: tôt ou tard ils ver­ront bi­en que ce n’est pas vrai! — Al­berto Grünbaum, qui est chair­man à Berke­ley, nous a in­vité en Cali­for­nia en mars. Il dit qu’il veut nous faire une of­fre. Là aus­si, je me de­mande si ils se rendent bi­en compte de ce qu’ils dis­ent. En­fin, nous ver­rons bi­en.

Merci en­core pour l’en­voi du premi­er tome to ton livre! Je me suis dit que je dev­rais y po­tass­er tous les jours (10 pages par jour) et que cela m’aid­e­rait à de­venir une vraie pro­fes­sion­elle. Ce que j’en ai déjà lu est mer­veil­leux.
